And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice -- the kind he will accept. When you think of what he has done for you, is this too much to ask? Rom. 12:1 (NLT)
When I was in high school I started going to a youth group at my friend’s church. They were preparing for an Easter play they did every year and I wanted to be involved. They took me to the director and she said, “great, are you a chicken or pig?”. I was confused, but she began to explain to me that with breakfast it is common to have bacon and eggs. Both the chicken and the pig contribute to meal. The chicken decides to be a part of the breakfast, but the pig is committed. I understood and assured her I would be committed to practice on my own, be at the rehearsals and at the shows. It was a great experience.
As Christians we have to make a decision. Are we going to be chickens or pigs when it comes to living for Christ? Are we interested in only knowing Christ, being saved and being a part of sharing the gospel? Or will we decide to get fully committed to the cause of Christ? Will we say, “Whatever it is you will Lord, I’m committed to it!”? Or will we go on with our lives, do our own thing and chose to be Sunday, maybe Wednesday followers of Christ?
I’ll warn you, there is a price to pay to be committed; you can’t just do your part and walk away. To be committed you must be all in, everything you have. True commitment leaves no room for reservations and loopholes. To be committed to Jesus is to be like the pig to breakfast; you must leave everything at the table.
I enjoyed immensely the play that I was in, I can still remember the good times we had, the fellowship we shared as we proclaimed the story of Jesus’ resurrection. It was hard, and it took up my time but it was very rewarding. Although commitment is hard and it takes everything you have, there is no other way to experience your relationship with God to the fullest then to be totally committed to Him everyday!
You will see things you thought impossible, He will use you in ways that you are not capable of, and He will rock your socks clean off!
So tell me, are you a chicken or a pig?
